Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
